History of Shri Badrinath Temple

The concern of the temple is rooted in the Hindu mythology that originated dating from the prehistoric age. According to local tradition, it was rebuilt by the theologian and philosopher Adi Shankaracharya in the eighth century onwards with the aim of bringing Hinduism back to the country.

There is a temple in this place where people worship Lord Vishnu as a black stone statue which is believed to be Swyam βοῦτta or manifested himself into the position of meditation. The art and architecture of this temple is a mind-blowing combination of North Indian style: Vivid color, bold carving and tall gold capping roof. Located in the sanctum or “Garbhagriha”, is the first or principal icon surrounded by subsidiary shrines dedicated to other deities.

Religious Significance of Shri Badrinath Dham Yatra

The pilgrims can go to Shri Badrinath Dham from April last week to November first week; it remains closed in winters due to snow. It is opened and closed on such calendar days, auspicious in Hindu calendars, every year. In winter, the statue is taken from the temple to the Narsimha Temple, Joshimath and worshipped till the shrine again opens.

Bathing in the “Tapt Kund”, a hot water spring well situated near the Shiva temple entrance is another tradition of pilgrims. Before getting to the shrine people wash themselves in the spring where they believe that water has a curative effect. The “Alaknanda River” – which flows along the temple and adds to the holiness of the territory, – and others are worth mentioning.
